Elissa Lomas

My name is Elissa Lomas, and I am 18 years of age. I am a Year 13 A-Level student, studying Biology, Mathematics and Further Mathematics and predicted A*s in all 3. I am a diligent student, priding myself on my ethos that it is not just general knowledge that is important, but understanding the logic behind why things work the way they do: in my opinion, this deeper understanding of subjects will lead to an increase in useful applications in the future, developing key crossover skills such as critical thinking.

My passion for learning has carried through to my super curricular activities:

from placing as “Best in School” multiple times in the UKMT Maths Challenges, and this leading to me being invited to an (exclusive to the top 1% of the country) UKMT Summer School in the summer of 2022, to being awarded our school’s prestigious Geography award in year 12 and the equivalent Sciences award in year 13. I put my full heart and soul into my learning, and am looking forward to passing on this joy to other people.

I have had good experience with tutoring in the past, having taken part in a school-run Maths mentoring programme. I have also applied to be a Senior in this year’s UKMT Summer School, which will give me valuable experience in helping intelligent students understand challenging subject matters. I have helped many people with their schoolwork in the past, with the general feedback being that I am very good at explaining concepts in an easy-to-understand way, and helping people truly grasp a subject instead of just memorising facts without basis. This, combined with my passion, makes me believe I make for a successful and engaging tutor.

I also took the 11+ exams when I was younger, with specific proficiencies in Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, though I will gladly tutor for English and Maths too. I was tutored for this, and will be incredibly willing to pass on the skills and techniques I learned from said tutoring to your child.
